In the same way that God cares for the family by providing leaders (parents) who care for it, one of the ways God cares for His people, the Church, is by raising up servant-leaders for the local church to care for its spiritual and material well-being. In Scripture we see that the church is led by a plurality of leaders (of which the pastor is one, not all), and that those leaders are to be elected to care for a local congregation by the members of that local congregation. Ultimately, such leaders are qualified by their life and character (see 1 Tim. 3:1-13 and Titus 1:5-16). Such a life is the by-product of God’s work in them, and as such, they are described as gifts that God bestows on the church to equip all his people, “saints”, for the work of ministry (see Eph. 4:11-12).
